Alliance for Excellent Education – Helping Make Every Child Graduate
Founded in 2001, the Alliance for Excellent Education (AEE) is a national Washington, D.C-based policy, research, and advocacy organization that seeks to promote high school reform in order to help every child graduate and be prepared for college and work in the future. The organization was founded by Gerard and Lilo Leeds, who also established publishing company CMP Media, Inc. and the Institute for Student Achievement (ISA), an organization that also aims to improve the quality of education for at-risk students by working in collaboration with low-performing schools.
The Alliance for Excellent Education works to make sure that sufficient resources are provided to the millions of students who are either unable to finish high school or go to college unprepared. The organization concentrates its efforts around 4 core initiatives, namely: to increase the adolescent literacy levels; to prepare students for college; to improve the quality of teaching and administration; and to promote the development of smaller and more personalized learning communities. Additionally, the Alliance works closely with policy makers at the local, state, and federal levels, as well as with educators, business leaders, researchers, the media, citizen’s groups, administrators, teachers, and students.
The organization reveals to us that every year, about 1.2 million students do not graduate from high school on time; teachers leave their profession after 5 years; and nearly 2,000 high schools across the United States graduate less than 60% of their students.
To address the alarming crisis that America is facing today, the Alliance for Excellent Education strives to close this widening education gap by advocating at the federal level for funding and policies through providing useful and nonpartisan advice; by raising public awareness and involvement through hosting and making presentations at conferences or meetings across the country; and by releasing publications that educate the press and other people such as the bi-weekly newsletter, Straight A’s, which informs us about public education policy and progress.
