Ross School
New York’s Ross School – Founded by Courtney Sale Ross
New York’s The Ross School was founded by Courtney and Steven J. Ross in 1991. It operates through Howard Gardner’s concept of Naturalist Intelligence, or the theory of multiple intelligences which touches on or defines the various intelligences displayed by human beings.
Known as the only private K-12 school in the Hamptons, the Ross School’s students are mostly children of prominent New Yorkers who enroll to experience the school’s holistic approach to global education, which trains them towards interdisciplinary, integrated thinking and innovative leadership. The Ross School also recognizes the need to prepare students for rapid changes brought about by the challenges of the 21st century. The Ross School aims to keep their students’ minds actively focused and interested in gaining knowledge so that their educational model centers on a completely unique individual learning experience.
At the Ross School, students are encouraged to explore learning areas other than the visual subjects. They integrate the arts, writing, literature, health and well-being, and computer technology into their classroom activities and discussions. Their curricular framework is centered on cultural history.
By connecting disciplines, students learn to address real-life situations and practice effective decision making.
An interesting and unique factor of the Ross School‘s holistic education model is the wellness program centered on sports, nutrition, and health education. The Ross School’s cafeteria offers two choices of vegetarian meals and does not encourage the use of vending machines.
One of the school’s halls encourages students to totally immerse themselves in the arts as it tells the history of art in intricate vinyl reproductions.
Communication is also an important part of the Ross School initiative. There are regular in-class conversations between teachers and students and parent-teacher conferences are held regularly. The students’ learning evaluations and progress reports for every trimester are sent to their parents.
Finally, teachers work in teams — planning, teaching, and assessing students together — in order to successfully evaluate the development and application of various discipline-specific skills.
The Ross School aims to prepare students for the global challenges of the future.
