CEMEX Donates to Schools
CEMEX USA, the North American branch of the leading building materials provider and cement manufacturer CEMEX, contributes $50,000 to a number of nonprofit community organizations annually. The main recipients of endowment are the two elementary schools situated in the towns of Bonny Doon and Davenport.
As memorialized on a permanent sign at Bonny Doon Elementary School’s entrance, the company is honored to be a certified business associate of the institution. Ever since 1997, CEMEX USA has been a benefactor of the school, contributing more than $5,000 to finance classroom aides who spend up to three hours every day assisting students and teachers to provide further individualized instruction. CEMEX too contributes 50 cents for each dollar that parents donate to the school. Because of its matching fund program, over $31,000 have been collected since 1998.
In 2007, the Davenport plant endowed $10,000 to improve the school’s music program as well as $2,000 for festival events and first aid training.
CEMEX USA’s affiliation with Davenport’s Pacific Elementary School started in 1996, during a property tax re-evaluation that caused the academic institutions a huge shortage of revenue for their essential educational programs. To make up for such shortage, the Davenport plant supplied seed money to put up an endowment drive to back the school’s programs, including libraries and music. This outreach continues to this day. Indeed, in 2007, CEMEX contributed an extra $35,000 to Pacific School in support of its music and library projects.
Aside from contributing to schools, CEMEX also funds environmental groups and local fire departments.
