Delivering on Student Loans

The Student Loans Company in the UK has recently released its latest figures with regards to their loan grants to students. The figures suggested that around 28,000 people from England are still awaiting their loans and grants while another 38,000 still have pending applications with the company, although the Company added that nearly half of these grantees already have their money.

The Student Company runs the student support system for England and in recent days has been criticized for the delays in its loan grants. The Company is now in the process of drawing up plans to address this problem. One of the measures that the company is considering includes an overall shake-up for the body’s management.

The latest figures released by the Company shows that there have been more than a million applications for loan grants made during the year, in line with the 10% increase in college applications all over England. Out of these applications, 907,000 have been granted while 82,000 were halted or not completed.

When the delays by the SLC came to public scrutiny in October, it made the decision to focus on those who have applied for loans by late August and gave them basic entitlement to a loan. Among the 28,000 pending applications that the SLC are processing at present, 5,000 are on the way to approval while the remaining 23,000 are incomplete and need further information from the sponsors.

Among the 38,000 who are still waiting to be paid in full by the SLC, 18,000 have been given interim assessments that will entitle them to their basic loan but not the means-tested element. The remaining people in this category, the SLC further notes, are those whose applications are already approved and processed but would still need to declare online using the company’s website before payment can be triggered.
