National Geographic Society’s Education Foundation

The National Geographic Society has been looking for ways to encourage people all over the world to care about our planet since 1888. As one of the biggest international nonprofit scientific and education establishments, it delves into natural science, geography, archaeology, historical conservation and environmental preservation.

The group formed its Education Foundation to inspire and move each generation to become geographically educated.

In achieving such a goal, the foundation tackles the following areas:

Policy reform. At present, all its key academic disciplines, excluding geography, receive United States federal assistance. The National Geographic Society is leading the movement to deal with it by collaborating with the Congress on a Policy Initiative.

Grantmaking. The foundation gives away over $5 million yearly to promote teacher training, outreach and other programs related to geography education. At the center of its efforts is its support for a nationwide grassroots association of Geography Alliances, with statewide collaborations between K-12 teachers and academic professors, providing professional development, networking and the like.

Public engagement. The National Geographic Education Foundation partners with nonprofit and national corporate organizations in launching the public engagement movement, My Wonderful World. The campaign’s main goal is to encourage parents and academic leaders to practice geography education at home, in the community and in schools.
