Danny Glover
One of the most respected and celebrated leading men in Hollywood, Danny Glover is also known for his philanthropic efforts. His endeavors mostly focus in the areas of economic justice, adequate healthcare, and education. Of the latter, Glover’s efforts include his participation with the Algebra Project and his outstanding support for charter schools. He also believes that quality education is an institutional right every child deserves to have.
With the Algebra Project, Glover visits schools and communities and helps in providing opportunities and bettering the quality of education of public schools. The said project also trains math teachers in new teaching approaches to help them effectively educate their students in the said subject.
He also involves himself in events that involve teachers, school board officials, and families of students to create effective approaches and solutions towards better education. Among the organization he works closely with is the James Singleton Charter School in New Orleans.
Glover is also a staunch supporter of President Barack Obama during the latter’s presidential campaign. Like Danny Glover, charter schools are the recently-elected president’s priority.
Danny Glover has traveled the world as a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF’s campaign to discuss and promote the importance of quality education, along with other socially significant issues. His UNICEF assignments have taken him to very depressed areas in Haiti, Mali, Namibia, Senegal, South Africa and Egypt. Most residents of the areas Glover visited are victims of war. A huge number of them are victims of landmines.
Aside from Africa, Glover also traveled to Latin America in behalf of UNICEF.
For his contributions and selfless efforts to help the international community, Glover has received the 002 Marian Anderson Award, 2003 NAACP Chairman’s Award and 2004 BET Lifetime Achievement Award.
