Gordon Moore
More known as the co-founder of Intel Corporation, Gordon Moore has given the world more than just memory chips. For one, he is the author of Moore’s Law. He is also an active philanthropist with primary focus on science and education, managing his and his wife’s charitable pursuits through the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation.
The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation aims to be part of projects and endeavors that will improve the quality of human lives in the near future. As what their foundation’s motto says, “Creating positive outcomes for future generations” is the organization’s goal.
In terms of education, Gordon Moore has always been passionate about improving the standards of higher education in general and engineering education in particular. His largest contribution, and also the grandest made by an individual to an institution of higher learning, was the $600 million donation to the California Institute of Technology, from where he earned his PhD in Chemistry.
The said donation, which was given in 2001, is being used to further advance technology and scientific research. Another large donation, $200 million, was given to Caltech and University of California for the construction of the world’s largest binocular telescope.
Gordon Moore believes that his role as a philanthropist is a case of being at the right place and the right time and having the needed resources. He also believes that having the amount of fortune that he has requires a substantial amount of responsibility. Moore knows it is his obligation to be able to efficiently allocate the money he has in order to create a positive impact.
With his strong dedication to the causes he serves — scientific research, the environment, Bay Area projects, and of course, higher education — Gordon Moore believes that he will be able to do many things better than the government can.
