Mayer Brown

Mayer Brown’s Pro Bono Efforts for Education

Mayer Brown is a global law firm with offices/business centers located across the Americas, and in Asia and Europe. Some of its clients are the world’s largest with the most prominent ones mostly belonging to the Fortune 100 and FTSE 100. Aside from the excellent legal services the firm provides, Mayer Brown is also known in the field of pro bono work.

Pro bono is a term used to describe legal work or service that is given free of charge. United States lawyers are required by The American Bar Association to complete at least 50 hours of pro bono service every year.

Most of Mayer Brown’s pro bono work is directed towards non-legal work: education. The firm has a number of education-related programs which it realizes through partnerships and involvements with several institutions and projects like the day-long workshop for New York’s incoming Latino law freshmen, “How to Succeed in Law School”; and Chicago’s Link Program, which matches low income students with mentors who can offer personal and financial commitment to high school students.

Mayer Brown also contributes significantly to the Everybody Wins Power Lunch Program, a lunchtime literacy and mentoring program that encourages volunteers to participate in one-on-one read aloud sessions meant for student of low income elementary schools.

The firm’s Washington office has a strong commitment to pro bono service and this is seen in the way it enthusiastically participates in the Adopt-A-School Program of the Washington Lawyer’s Committee for Civil Rights Under Law. It also partners with Gage-Eckington Elementary School in carrying out important activities like mentoring programs for 4th graders, organizing fundraising events, and actively participating in a host of other school- and education-based events and activities.

To further ensure that the firm’s pro bono initiatives are properly carried out, Mayer Brown has assigned a full-time director for this purpose. Together with the full-time assistant director, and a pro bono partner in London, the director coordinates the firm’s pro bono activities while also developing purposeful pro bono projects.
