Michael Bloomberg
The Texas-based CEO and founder of Dell, Inc, Michael Dell, is one of the world’s most generous philanthropists. Together with his wife, they formed the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation, a nonprofit organization with an endowment of $1 billion that extends support to healthcare, family and children welfare, and education.
With regard to charitable acts in the area of education, Michael Dell, through his foundation, has donated significant amounts of financial aid for the improvement of education. His $50 million grant to University of Texas–Austin in 2006 was one of the biggest donations he has given to an institution of higher learning.
He is also active in ensuring that quality education is not to be limited within the borders of the United States, but should be taught on a global scale. Dell’s efforts to better the grade of education in Ireland’s local communities, along with his investments, have earned him an Honorary Doctorate in Economic Science from the University of Limerick. Dell’s pursuit of quality education for members of the urban poor has reached the shores of India as well.
Along with other corporate CEOs, Dell is a strong proponent for charter schools. Just recently, the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation welcomed the emergence of the new Texas Charter Schools Association and donated $1.7 million to the newly organized group for its projects. Dell and his wife believe that the growing presence of charter schools in the state of Texas will continue to provide quality education opportunities for students of the state.
To date, the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation has cashed out an estimated total of $60 million in support of the charter schools initiatives across 18 states in the country.
Dell also pushes for the inclusion of technology-based classroom learning and has launched Dell YouthConnect in relation to this goal.
