Nelson Smith
Current President of the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools, Nelson Smith, has always been an avid supporter for policies that favor the establishment of public schools in all states of the US. Supported by proven facts, Smith has repeatedly highlighted the positive impacts of charter schools not just to the improvement of the education system in the country, but of the community in general and the individual in particular.
Smith has also challenged educational system bigwigs who still apply the traditional measures with his declarations that the charter system has produced results. He has presented that charter schools in recent studies have a gravitational pull on children who are considered high-risk and have therefore helped these children improve dramatically in terms of their academic capabilities. In non-academic areas, Smith argues that charter schools also have positive aftermaths, such as improved and growing parental satisfaction and increasing number of student retention.
Smith believes that charter schools provide the source of positive academic competition in their respective districts, egging other schools, both private and public, to perform better. These are some of the arguments, all of which are bolstered by solid evidence, Smith champions.
However, even if charter school policies are strong in some states, much of their operations are managed by local school districts and not by private individuals, especially in the state of California. Other obstacles faced by Smith and his fellow charter schools advocates include lack of funding from the government and inadequate space for academic and other essential learning facilities for public schools.
Smith has designed a “Charter Wave” program for the state of California to ensure the development of charter schools within its boundaries. In this program, Smith has discussed the possible action the State Government of California might take if they are to catch the wave and further spearhead the improvement of education’s quality in the state.
